Architect and interdisciplinary artist Hassan Ragab has delved into an ongoing journey exploring the intersection between architecture and technology, experimenting with the bounds and potentials of AI design tool Midjourney. In a pursuit to uncover a new surreal visual vocabulary, the designer returns with his new AI-generated architecture series ‘A State of Decay’. The conceptual Project envisions dreamlike art nouveau structures that are part reality, part fantasy, depicting stone and glass elements emerging from sweeping clouds of smoke and disintegrating into thin air.

Blurring the boundaries between fantasy and reality, Hassan Ragab’s AI series ‘A State of Decay’ explores new form finding techniques for architecture using smoke as a fantastical building element. The artworks superimpose interventions of the mystical form onto art nouveau facades, weaving fictional and real elements together to generate surrealist compositions. Exploring a historic architectural language’s ability to transform into new parameters, the Egyptian designer poses questions of architectural aesthetics and a building’s life cycle by integrating fluid smoke forms within organic stone ornamentations of monumental structures.

Commenting on his experimentation with AI tools, Hassan Ragab explains: ‘Architects and designers are facing many limitations regarding the use of AI diffusion models in their professions. Intermediate, the AI ​​text to image generators offer the unique opportunity to expand the creatives’ imagination regardless of their fields, as these tools give its users the ability to freely explore and visualize their wildest dreams. This is ultimately leading to the pursuit of new visual vocabulary away from the norm.’
